    Open Huts and Reservable Cabins in the vicinity of Hetta

    There are a number of open huts, reservable cabins and, of course, private cabins available for hire, in and around the immediate village of Hetta.

    Jyppyrä Campfire Shelter

    The Campfire Shelter is located in Hetta, on top of Jyppyrä Hill, about 700 metres from the Fell Lapland Nature Centre. There is an extraordinary view of the Hetta area and the surrounding nature from the top of Jyppyrä. You can see the whole Pallas-Ounastunturi Fell chain from a viewpoint just above the Campfire Shelter itself. The trail sets off from the Fell Lapland Nature Centre and is well signposted. In summer it is easy to walk a predominantly circular route. We recommend taking the fork in the track to the right on the way up and descending via the stairs on the way down (ie by taking the right fork in the track again in the reverse direction).
    Facilities: Fireplace, wood and grilling sticks. There is no water source on top of Jyppyrä Hill. It is possible to borrow a coffeepot and a water container from the Fell Lapland Nature Centre. There is no waste management at the campfire shelter so hikers are asked to bring their own waste out of the area.
    Notices: Hetta Hiihtomaa, Hetta's Ski Resort is located near the Campfire Shelter. During winter time it is possible to walk with snowshoes in the area.

    Muotkajäarvi Day Trip Hut

    The day trip hut is situated by the narrow pass at the north end of Muotkajärvi Lake. You will get only slightly wet feet if you go in by land in the middle of summer (you can't do this in Spring, during meltwater season) if you follow the higher ground starting from c. 200m down the main road from the parking area in the direction of Hetta.
    Facilities: Fireplace.
    Notices: Beware that this hut doesn't get used very often so the chimney will easily get blocked, and the hut fairly smokey, if you start a big fire straight away, so go easy when starting it.

    Sissanki Rental Hut

    Sissanki Rental Lapp Hut can be used for meetings and get-togethers for 15 persons. Up to 5 people can even sleep there.

    Location:Sissanki Rental Lapp Hut is located along the Hetta - Näkkälä Trail. The Lapp hut is also near the Hetta - Näkkälä snowmobile track.Coordinates for the Lapp Hut WGS84 lat: 68.43715 lon: 23.61489. It is easiest to get to the Näkkälä Trail from the Fell Lapland Nature Centre. Do not go without a map! It is about 7 km hike to the Lapp Hut from the Fell Lapland Nature Centre located in Hetta.
    Facilities:An open fireplace, a dry toilet in the immediate vicinity of the Lapp Hut.

    Notice:Pets are not permitted in the hut and there is no heat-storing device at Sissanki Rental Lapp Hut.

    Haunted Open Hut on the Näkkälä Trail

    This open hut is located after the bookable Sissanki Hutt on the same trail between Hetta and Näkkälä. It sleeps 4 - 6 people and has a stove.

    Närpistö Lean-to Shelter on the Pahtajärvi Trail

    Närpistö lean-to shelter is located at the Pahtajäarvi's halfway point. The trail starts at the Fell Lapland Nature Centre and then separates from the Kuntopolku, Palosenjärvi and Näkkäla trails after reaching Jyppyrä Hill on the lit jogging track towards the Paljasselkä Fell. At Sissanginselkä the Pahtajärvi Trail turns west and the trail to Näkkälä continues to the north. After the Närpistönjoki lean-to shelter, the Pahtajärvi Trail turns south towards Pahtajärvi.


    Private Cabins available for rent near Saivomuotka

    These fairly isolated cabins on the side of the majestic border river which separates Finnish and Swedish Lapland, are mostly targeted at fishermen. From the well-known landmark which is the souvenir shop of Arctic Knife, (otherwise known as 'Sanna's shop') at Sonkamuotka, situated beween Muonio and Palojoensu, when driving towards Hetta, you turn left towards Saivomuotka (where there is a seasonal ice bridge to the small sister village of Saivomuotka in Sweden, in winter).

    Kelokurkkio Wilderness Cabin
    Location:Kelokurkkio wilderness cabin is situated in Saivomuotka by the Muoniojoki river, about 3.5 km from the main road and the village of Sonkamuotka. There are fast-flowing rapids near-by. There is space for 6 persons in the cabin. Accessible by car in the summer, in winter distance to the parking place is 200 m. Drive on a highway E8 either north from Muonio for 34 km or 17 km to the south from Palojoensuu towards Sonkamuotka. From Sonkamuotka a distance of 3.5 km to Saivomuotka from the main road and the cabin is located right by the river Muoniojoki.
    Facilities:Candle lighting, gas stove, iron stove which is also the heater, outdoor toilet, sauna, cellar, site for an open fire, rowing boat, water from the river.

    Kelovaara Wilderness Cabin
    Location:Kelovaara wilderness cabin is situated in Saivomuotka by Muoniojoki river, about 3.5 km from the main road and the village of Sonkamuotka. There are fast flowing rapids by the river close by. The cabin was completed in year 2000. There is space for 6 persons in the cabin. Accessible by car in the summer, in winter distance to the parking place is 200 m. A cabin Kelokurkkio is 200 meters far away. Drive on a highway E8 north from Muonio for 34 km and 17 km to the south from Palojoensuu towards Sonkamuotka. From Sonkamuotka a distance of 3.5 km to Saivomuotka from the main road and the cabin is located right by the river Muoniojoki.

    Elsewhere

    Puolitaival Open Wilderness Hut
    Location:The 6-person open wilderness hut is situated on the bank of the River Siosjoki. It is along Puolitaipale Trail and the snowmobile track. In other words, it is on the snowmobile track between Hetta and Muonio.
    Facilities:A stove
    Notices:Pets are permitted in the hut, but only in case that other visitors agree with it.
    Waste Management: Waste bins. The goal of the National Park is to be a litter-free area and hikers are adviced to bring their own waste out of the area.

    Palojoensuu Private Wilderness Cabin for rent
    Location:Palojoensuu wilderness cabin is situated on the bank of river Muonionjoki (about 300 m from the shore of the river), 44 km North of Muonio and about 6 km South of Palojoensuu village. Well-suitable for fishermen and canoeists. Accessible by car in summer, in winter parking place 150 m away (along the main road). Drive along the highway E8 north from Muonio for 44 km. The cabin is found by the river of Muonionjoki.
    Facilities:Wood stove heating, gas stove, candle lighting, drinking water from spring. Sauna in a separate building, site for an open fire, outdoor toilet, ground cellar, rowing boat.
