WILDERNESS-TARGETED FIRST AID TRAINING

We offer an internationally recognised first aid qualification from Emergency First Response Level 1 and 2which is equivalent in standard to the Finnish Red Cross' (SPR) EA (First Aid) Level 1 course - the basic first aid qualification requirement for wilderness guides.

Our version of the EFR-equivalent course is a combination of the EFR Level 1 and 2 course with two additional modules. One is a cold-related module and the other involves practical hands-on training scenarios. The course can, of course, be tweaked to the interests of the participating group, but we feel that the practical scenarios and in-depth exploration into 'cold' are important for the majority of our client groups since they are designed to simulate real-world wilderness situations that guides might find themselves in.

Where we operate is literally far from help and unfortunately, the ambulance and medical services around which the Finnish-approved entry-level courses are based, are unlikely to materialise in many of the real-world scenarios that arctic guides and clients might find themselves in.

Here, for instance, access to medically trained personel might be 3 hours from an incident on a good day, even by helicopter, and this could easily stretch to more than 12 hours in bad weather. In addition to this, we supplement the basics required by law, by also offering an additional module in cold-related injuries (prevention and treatment) and by . Those looking for a more in-depth wilderness-style first aid course in Finland are currently restricted to either a NOLS (National Outdoor Leadership School) WAFA Wilderness Advanced First Aid Course in the South of Finland or Wilderness Medical Associate's Wilderness First Responder course, also in the South of Finland.
