Mid-Length Safaris

These are our safaris which last from c. 2 - 4 hours - in other words, up to half a day.

If you have booked ahead of time, your team will be ready for you and we will run the farm visit part of your tour at the end. If not, it is no problem so long as we have staff and dogs available - we will simply get you involved in harnessing a team with us or, if you have children, show you around the farm first, whilst other staff prepare your team.

Whistling Winds

What better way to spend an hour of your life than gliding seamlessly between open marshes, lakes and forest glens on a spectacular 9km husky safari? Speed along the snowy tracks pulled by 5 – 7 husky dogs and enjoy the unique opportunity of being way out in the wilderness, listening only to the sound of the sledge’s skis gliding across the snow.

We will stop during the ride to give the dogs a break and enable you to take some photos / swap driving positions. And, once back at the farm, you are welcome to spend more time with the dogs or even help us settle them back into their homes.

Frozen Lakes

This safari not only journeys across marshes, rivers and through forest glades but also across the area’s largest lake, Ounasjarvi. Once frozen, each winter, its ice cover is >1m thick. Hence, when your cross to its Southern Shores, you can be sure that there is no danger of falling in!

Once there, you will spend time in a local ‘Mokki’ - an example of the traditional lake-side holiday home that most Finns aspire to own. Enjoy stories, drinks and a traditional ‘forest bun’ in homely comfort before returning, by dog sleigh, to the farm.

Snowcastle by Dog Sled

Each year, at least one snowcastle is built in Hetta. Ours are not quite the size of the famous ice venues in Kiruna or Kemi but they are stil pretty cool and no-one wants to leave Hetta without having had a chance to both visit the main castle and to mush with the dogs. Hence, unless you have your own transport, why not head to the snowcastle by husky and turn your morning or afternoon into a great combination adventure.

FYI:The snowcastle is generally in one of three places in the village. Hence, we unfortunately cannot accept pre-season bookings for this tour until we know where it will actually be located since we cannot reach all of the locations by dog team.

When the castle is in its standard location, we head out from the farm into open tundra landscapes and then turn onto a tight, twisty trail within the forest, en route to the castle. Once there, we will park the teams and then most of our guides will wait with the dogs whilst you head inside the castle to enjoy a guided tour, cookies and hot drinks.

When you have warmed up and learned everything that you want to know about how the castle is actually made, you can once more return to your waiting teams for the fun-filled journey back to the farm.

'Magic Of Winter' Safari

This c. 20km safari along arctic trails is one of the ones that the guides enjoy driving best because of its variety. At times you are whipping along tight tracks with lots of ups and downs and corners and at others, you are traversing marshes, forest glades and frozen rivers. About half way, you cross the area’s largest lake, Lake Ounasjarvi, (with an ice cover is >1m thick each winter…there is no danger of falling in). As you cross to its Southern Shores you can truly marvel at the Arctic Landscape and the life of those who have lived here for eons.

We take a break, in this safari, in a local ‘Mokki’ to experience a little of the traditional lake-side holiday-home life of the Finns. Enjoy drinks, Finnish squeaky cheese & cloudberry jam (if it is a cold enough day for us to have pre-warmed the cabin with an open fire) or forest cakes (on warmer days, when we think people will prefer to sit outside and enjoy the view) in homely comfort before returning, by dog sleigh, to the farm.

For those who wish, we can teach you how to actually look after your team during the breaks and once back at the farm, you will normally be welcome to help tuck your dog team back into their own kennels before saying goodbye.

Programme Duration: c. 3.5-hour
Price: Adults €135, Children (age 3 – 12) €80. Solo or guide-driven sleigh €180
Price includes: Farm visit, hot drinks, a snack and c. 20km safari.
