8 day Arctic Mushing package.

Our 8 day Arctic Mushing package includes 5 days of Wilderness Mushing with room and board on either side. The 8-day package also includes an additional free day (and night) in the area in which to explore or take part in additional arctic activities.

The free day can be used to learn about the Lappish culture, visit nearby places of interest or explore the area by snowshoes, cross-country skis or even snowmobiles (costs not included). Reindeer farms can be visited, there is a small local downhill ski centre and there is also a superb nature and Sami cultural centre in the village which is well worth a visit.

If you have the time to spend a full week in the North (ie: arrival and departure on a Saturday), the 8-day package is not only the best value for money option for anyone taking part in a 5-day wilderness safari but it also takes all of the worries about ground logistics away from you.

One nice aspect of the packaged product is that it gives people a chance to come together already before the safari starts for some shared experiences on the farm and then to stay in the same family-run hotel in Hetta, in twin rooms, post safari.

The optimum group size for this safari is six clients and you are generally accompanied by two guides. This is an appropriate number for the size of the wilderness cabins and it also means that we can move through the wilderness without having to take too many stops. Most people find that when we combine would-be mushers to reach optimal group sizes, that the shared experience with like-minded adventurers is part of the fun.

If you are interested in an exclusive safari for just two people, or in booking as a slightly larger family group, please consider visiting us in April. It is rarely possible to accommodate such requests in our peak season - unless, of course, the exclusive groups would like to 'pay the safari full'. NB: For groups over 8 we tend to adapt the route slightly so as to utilise one or two of the few larger cabins available in the area.

General Information

Programme Duration: 8 days
Number of Days of Mushing: 5
Availability:
From the beginning of January until the end of April. Please check our current availability page, first, to see that we have spaces available when you hope to visit.

Schedule: The standard 8-day product runs from Saturday to Saturday. It includes one night before the safari starts on the homestead and two nights post safari in the local hotel. (Modifications on this standard package are possible - for instance to take advantage of the mid-season Enontekiö flights - with set modification fees if there are additional hotel nights.)

Accommodation & Board
The first 2 nights (ie the pre-safari night and the first night of the safari) are spent on the homestead in our traditional farm kota (circular log cabin with central fireplace) surrounded by all of our dogs and the last two nights are spent in a 3* family hotel in Hetta. The 3 additional safari nights are spent in wilderness cabins. The kota has underfloor heating but no running water. 2 of the cabins are true wilderness cabins with access to saunas and one has a shower, electricity, indoor toilet, heating etc.

When on the farm, people have the option to spend the evenings relaxing in the kota or joining in fully with farm life - including the feeding of 170 odd dogs. The safari's safety presentation is given on the second evening. Full board is included throughout.

Transfers to and from Enontekiö airport are also included and we can help to arrange the logistics of your transfers from Kittilä airport for an additional fee.

Price: Adults: €1700
Price includes: 5 days of mushing for 30—40km per day through the arctic wilderness with a personal dog team; kit and clothing suitable for the arctic; expert guiding through the tour - for the majority of the time with a guiding ration of 1:3; a guided farm visit and sled-driving training session; briefings on arctic safety and survival; a personal mentor during the two evenings spent on the farm's homestead when there is the chance to take part in a wide range of farm and dog-related activities (walking oldies, playing with pups, brushing dogs, carrying out medically-related tasks or simply feeding the farm of c. 170 dogs), 7 night's accommodation with full board (two nights of which are spent on the farm homestead in a traditional kota, 3 nights in wilderness cabins and 2 nights, post safari, in a local family hotel.

FYI: For 2017, there are mid-Feb to mid-March flights available directly to Enontekiö airport. However, these arrive on the morning of the 1st day of the safari. Hence, purchasing an 8-day package around these flights means that you miss out on the first evening in the farm kota and need an additional hotel night post safari. Hence for this option, we are charging €1750 to come half-way towards covering the extra costs involved.
