2017-18 SAFARI AVAILABILITY

Please use this page (which is updated c. once per week) to check space availability on the tour of your preference before contacting us to book!

5-DAY WILDERNESS SAFARI:
Bookable also as a 7 or 8-DAY ARCTIC MUSHING PACKAGE

NB: The full board 8-day package is priced to be the best value since we believe that this is how clients get the most from their safari experience.

Normal number of participants: 6. (Can be larger for private bookings).
Possible between: Jan 8th and c. end April.
Generally run each week from: Sunday to Thursday

Those booking the all-inclusive 7 or 8-day packages will arrive at the farm on the day prior to the start of the tour (airport shuttles can be arranged). The 7-day package ends on the day after the safari returns to the farm. The optional free day within the 8-day package is normally scheduled at the end of the safari so that people have time to learn more about the adventure options available to them on this day. This is not, however, set in stone.

Those booking ground-only safaris need to arrive at the farm by 10am on the first day and the tour will be over once we have returned to the homestead on Day 5 and had a farewell coffee whilst handing kit back in.

EARLY WINTER 'TRAIL BLAZING' DATES.

NB: The first dates quoted in the tables below are for the tour booked as a ground-only 5-day Wilderness Safari; the second, when the tour is booked as an all-inclusive 7 or 8-day arctic mushing package.

WEEK

5-day Wilderness Safari

7 or 8-day Arctic Mushing

Availability

Week 2: Jan. 7th - 11th Jan. 6th - 12th / 13th Fully Booked
Week 3: Jan. 14th - 18th Jan. 13th - 19th / 20th Fully Booked
Week 4: Jan. 21st - 26th Jan. 20th - 27th / 28th Fully Booked
Week 5: Jan. 28th - Feb. 1st Jan. 27th - Feb. 2nd / 3rd Fully Booked

If you choose to come at this time, be ready for long days, tough conditions including some sledding in the dark and clients are very likely to need to work hard to help the dogs on the hills. The trails should be marked for use by others by the start of Feb. and they start to become easier after that. Until then, however, we are making our own tracks each week and there is little time in the evenings to hang out and relax. This is full-on expedition mode and you need to be tough and fit enough to not only survive but enjoy the challenge.

DATES DURING THE FROSTY DEPTHS OF THE ARCTIC WINTER:

WEEK

5-day Wilderness Safari

7 or 8-day Arctic Mushing

Availability

Week 6: Feb. 4th - 09th Feb. 3rd - 10th / 11th Fully Booked
Week 7: Feb. 11th - 15th Feb. 10th - 16th/17th Fully Booked
Week 8: Feb. 18th - 22nd Feb. 17th - 23rd / 24th Places available
Week 9: Feb. 25th - March 1st Feb. 24th - March 2nd / 3rd Places available

This is the time of long cold days & variable trails. It can be very physical to sled and this time of year - particularly since the coldest weeks are often in February. Hence, this is still full-on arctic mode so please do not book to come before the end of this period if you have any heightened risk factors relating to cold injuries (diabetes / heart conditions requiring beta blockers etc).

SPRING BECKONS: TIME OF CRYSTALISING SNOW & SOLIDIFYING TRAILS.

WEEK

5-day Wilderness Safari

7 or 8-day Arctic Mushing

Availability

Week 10: March 4th - 08th March 3rd - 09th / 10th Places available
Week 11: March 11th - 15th March 10th - 16th / 17th Places available
Week 12: March 18th - 22nd March 17th - 23rd / 24th Places available

It is hard to predict exactly what you will experience at this time since the winter does not give up its hold on the arctic easily but Spring is just around the corner. More people venture out onto the trails and they, in turn, solidify so for the dogs, at least, things become a little easier, and the physical demand on the clients also starts to reduce.

Week 17: April 23rd - 27th April 22nd - 28th / 29th Subject to conditions

This is the time to visit the arctic if you want your dog-sledding holiday to be just that - an enjoyable holiday as opposed to an expeditionary challenge! At this time we also have more capacity to offer private or customised tours so this is a great time for families and those with physical or medical challenges that make cold weather dangerous, to visit.
For a few short weeks in Spring, the landscape becomes truly accessible and it is possible to walk off-track and explore around the cabins in the long evenings. The only downside is that it can be a bit icy at times. The main benefit of sledding at this time is that the evenings are long and there is, therefore, a chance to enjoy spending plenty of time with the dogs and relaxing in the evenings.

2-DAY POLAR NIGHT TOURS & NORTHERN LIGHTS NIGHT TOURS

Normal number of participants: 2 - 6

Possible between: c. mid-Dec and c. end April.
These tours are essentially run on demand, when we have capacity.

NB: Once we have taken bookings for a specific tour, we then list those dates as 'having spaces available' and we will then try to fill these specified dates prior before offering alternative dates, particularly within a given week, because of the staffing resources required per tour. For other date possibilities, please enquire.

We provisionally schedule these tours for Thu - Fri but it also possible - particularly outside the busiest weeks / for those tours utilising the traditional farm kota - to run them on other days.

FYI: We tend to offer either the shorter or longer version of the Northern Lights Night Tour only when folk genuinely can't make it to Hetta in time to take part in the start of a standard 2-day polar night since the overnight safaris put the same resource demands on us regardless of their length and we really only advertise these alternative options to make an overnight tour possible for those for whom it would otherwise be impossible.

PLEASE BOOK EARLY to avoid disappointment! The peak periods fill quickly as soon as we start to answer emails for the following season. If you see that you have missed your ideal spot, think about April when there is generally sufficient capacity to put on additional tours to those currently listed, if demand is high enough.
